...and already considering a pistol.

Kinja'd!!!

Thinking of getting a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , to be used for IPSC (USPSA) for Classic Division Minor factor.

Anyone with experience with these? They seem to review very well and seem reliable based on what I read so far, and the one I’m looking at has all the bells and whistles yet still cheaper than a Glock:

- Fiber front sight, adjustable rear
- Tunable trigger
- G10 Grips
- Magwell

Although the brand is not that common here with Canada, only found a handful that carry the brand and only one shop with the specific model I want. I can’t afford the fancy STIs, Limcats where all my friends are getting...

Uhhhh you need an RPAL for a handgun.

Both in one shot (pun intended) . Taking a 2- day weekend course.

Perfect. Sometimes they only offer the PAL course on its own.

Why do you need a gun? I recommend getting a bromeliad instead!  It will help with the air quality in your home!

You can throw tennis balls at targets! And the good thing is the tennis balls are reusable! Not the case with bullets!

Far more cost-effective!

PAL is a Possession and Acquisition License. It allows for the holder to purchase and possess non-restricted firearms (long rifles and shotguns).

An RPAL is a Restricted Possession and Acquisition License. It allows for the holder to purchase and possess restricted firearms (which includes handguns*).

Generally, unless grandfathered in, people aren’t allowed prohibited firearms. A list of such can be found in the Criminal Code.

With so many newer, lighter, accurate options... I’m genuinely curious. Why a 1911?

I’m partial to the Germans and Austrians, so I don’t relate to  the perennial interest in the 1911 designs.  But, I clearly don’t get it.

I’m used to the action. I actually shoot Marui Hi-Capas right now for IPSC Action Air, which is modeled after the 2011. I do know in production class the CZ Shadow 2 and Glocks are much more common, especially with the slide-cut optics.

Kinja'd!!!0

If your car was broken into, why would your license get revoked?

I’ve read a lot of comments here from Canadians about how whacko lax our gun laws are in this country. So I was trolling a wee bit, but I’m surprised to see a Canadian post about purchasing a handgun.

Kinja'd!!! Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo > CB
10/31/2020 at 17:49

That’s way more strict than in the USA, but that’s been covered here more than once. I was surprised to see a Canadian going to buy a handgun.

10/31/2020 at 17:50

It wasn’t revoked just stolen and replaced . I had to have it cancelled and re-issued otherwise someone could have used it to buy a gun or ammo

I mean, I have a handgun, but that’s a bit different.

Canadians enjoy guns. Ask anyone between Abbotsford and Sudbury how they feel about gun control, they will more than likely give you a very different response from what you see on here.

Not sure how your laws and such work up there, but it depends on the purpose of it i f you’re gun shopping without something in particular in mind. Carry? You’ll want something smaller and lighter than a 1911. Just a range toy? Get whatever you like, but keep in mind the 1911 is single stack so you’ll spend more time reloading . I like a mid-size Glock for an all-arounder but there are a ton of options.

I hav e a love-hate thing with the Glock action... The ex-military guys love that “n0-safety, safety, just kidding” trigger, but the stats on unintended discharges are sobering. Even with the trained police usage.

OTOH, those products out of Ulm seem to hit the right balance, so I’ve gravitated that direction lately.  You get used to the Long Pull, Short Pull thing-- and it makes sense.

No disrespect for the 1911s BTW.  Solid, reliable, proven.  Just curious on your view of the tradeoffs--  some of these light, compact, stacked arrangements are amazing bits of machinery.

A 9mm 1911? Sacrilege!

Seriously though, I've heard Rock Island 1911s are perfectly good guns even though they're only about $500. Hickok45 likes them, and I trust his opinion on 1911s.

I’m going for the IPSC Classic division which is restricted to single-stack 1911s. There’s also a capacity limitation of 7-9+1 rounds (caliber, major/minor scoring) , which is 1 short from the legal limit of 10, so it’s pretty fair game. I don’t mind reloading, if anything I actually enjoy those stages with mandatory reloads.

Stacked actually makes no difference here actually, aside from a wider grip. Our legal limit is actually 10 for any handgun. Only makes a difference if we decide to take our guns across the border to shoot USPSA, then which the guns are uncapped when used with unpegged magazines.

Mag limit in California is also 10, which makes travel back and forth between Tucson and Santa Barbara interesting... Always check your packing list twice if headed westbound.

Arizona and California have two completely different schools of thought on the matter.

I’ve owned a few 1911s over the years; a Colt Gold Cup, a Springfield Armory and now a Charles Daly custom. It started out as a decent shooter out of the box , but after adding a full length guide rod & better sights the groups are impressively tight. Not interested in a full race gun, so no compensator. 9mm is an interesting option I never really considered before.

Yeah, I don’t have an unlimited budget to go o pen division either, lol.

I just personally like the 1911 for some reason, and got used to shooting that action. I kind of treat joining IPSC matches as like going to a track day rather than a full blown competition , so I’m not looking to spend top dollar to try to win.

What baffles me though is our rule on replicas being completely banned. I have a hell of a time trying to get airsoft guns and parts (specifically frames and receivers) , and the rule as stated is basically determined by the mood of the CBSA agent that day.

Agreed. We have less “accidental” shootings because everyone’s not always worried about the “other” person whipping out a gun.

I live in Illinois, so we are required (for now possibly, our General Assembly is currently debating whether or not to abolish it) to have something similar called a Firearm Owners Identification, or FOID. Without which, no Illinois resident can legally purchase, possess, transfer, or sell firearms or ammo. Online retailers are supposed to ask us for a picture or our FOID and driver’s license before shipping to an Illinois address.

Literally right after posting my last comment, I bought some .45 ACP online and not once did the site ask for it. So yeah, I totally get it now.

Yeah, I’m going with 9mm partially due to cost as well, and the more manageable recoil . Though the top competition goes for .38 Super in the Open division, but that stuff cost like 65c per shot...

If you already have the PAL you might as well get the RPAL. The course is basically same as PAL but with a bit more info about transport and ammo, and the “safety” stuff feels more like a driver’s exam.

Oh, and we got a de-pinned Ruger .357 Magnum as the trainer and exam piece. Too bad the semi-auto was some Beretta .22LR target pistol, it messed me up because the controls were exactly the opposite of a 1911.
